NO. 3 SONSIO DALLARA/CHEVROLET
START – 18TH
FINISH – 8TH
POINTS – 6TH (-125)
RACE RUNDOWN: A weekend of steady improvement proved dividends for Scott McLaughlin and the No. 3 Sonsio Chevrolet team as he brought home an eighth-place finish at Road America. No doubt with a little extra pressure carrying the race entitlement sponsor on his car, McLaughlin gained eight positions from his 18th starting spot within the first 10 laps of the event. Strong pit service by the Sonsio crew gained McLaughlin an additional position by lap 12. He would settle into the eighth position for much of the midpoint of the race. McLaughlin would pit on lap 25 needing to fulfill his one stint on the Firestone red tires. The alternate tire proved to be a challenge for the balance of the Sonsio Chevrolet and Mclaughlin would fall to 10th in the running order. Some good coaching and encouragement from strategist Kyle Moyer kept McLaughlin in the game and by lap 41 the window opened to get back on primary tires for the run to the finish. He would utilize the fresh rubber to gain two additional positions and came home eighth at the end of the 55-lap event.
MCLAUGHLIN’S THOUGHTS: “I just think it’s very easy to use a lot of push to pass and making sure that you have some available to you. But ultimately it was just a tire race. People that were on the reds when there’s heaps of yellows, you know, guys like (Scott) Dixon benefit huge. Ultimately, I think we’re probably top-six today. This is a good bounce back. We really found something in the warm-up today, I think balance-wise the car felt nice, so I’m happy with that.”
